It only a matter of minutes after the song Happy Together was played at the Republican convention before Howard Kaylan of the Turtles announced he was starting a lawsuit.
The convention, which opened today in Cleveland, started with The Star Spangled Banner and the Pledge of Allegiance before the sounds of the Turtles 1967 hit was heard throughout the arena.
Twitter user Don Breen alerted the singer to the performance, saying “@howardkaylan Happy Together being played at RNC wow!!”
Kaylan almost immediately jumped on, saying “We never approved this use. Now we call the lawyers.”

Less than an hour later, he was back on Twitter with a link to a Mike Pence interview. “DONALD MAY WANT A REDO. Vice Presidential Nominee Mike Pence Doesn’t Accept Evolution/Climate Change”
While there have been a few high profile cases of musicians objecting to politician’s use of their music, things seem to be a bit cooler than in the last two elections. Still, there have been a few cases including music by R.E.M., Neil Young and the Shangri-Las.
But, then, the election year is still young.
