Late last week, longtime big leaguer Curt Schilling sent out a tweet congratulating his daughter Gabby for being accepted to Salve Regina University in Rhode Island:
I'm sure Curt and his family are very proud and they should be.
But, because the internet is an awful place, Schilling received several vulgar replies, including some mentioning rape. Schilling took to his blog to not only discuss the vulgarity, but also out two of the men who made the comments:
I was a jock my whole life. I played sports my whole life. Baseball since I was 5 until I retired at 41. I know clubhouses. I lived in a dorm. I get it. Guys will be guys. Guys will say dumb crap, often. But I can't ever remember, drunk, in a clubhouse, with best friends, with anyone, ever speaking like this to someone…...“The Sports Guru”? Ya he's a DJ named Adam Nagel (DJ is a bit strong since he's on the air for 1 hour a week) on Brookdale Student Radio at Brookdale Community College. How do you think that place feels about this stud representing their school? You don't think this isn't going to be a nice compilation that will show up every single time this idiot is googled the rest of his life? What happens when a potential woman he's after googles and reads this? The other clown? He's VP of the Theta Xi fraternity at Montclair State University. I gotta believe if Theta Xi is cool with a VP of one of their chapters acting like this I'd prefer to have no one I know in it. Also, does anyone attending Montclair State University have a student handbook? If so can you pass it along because I am pretty sure there are about 90 violations in this idiots tweets.
Soon after Schilling's blog post went live, Brookdale Community College released a statement on Facebook saying Nagel has been suspended and is facing further discipline:
Students and community members have rightfully expressed concerns regarding recent social media comments made by a Brookdale student. The Twitter comments posted by this student are unacceptable and clearly violate the standards of conduct that are expected of all Brookdale students. The student has been summarily suspended and will be scheduled for a conduct hearing where further disciplinary action will be taken. The Brookdale Police are actively investigating this matter. Brookdale takes this behavior very seriously and does not tolerate any form of harassment. Our sincerest apologies to Gabby Schilling. Her achievement should be celebrated and not clouded by offensive comments.
The other man -- the VP of Theta Xi at Montclair State -- has since been identified as Sean MacDonald. MacDonald was hired by the Yankees as a part-time ticket taker at the end of January, the team confirmed, and he has since been fired.
Erin O'Neill of NJ Advance Media has more:
MacDonald was hired as a part-time ticket seller for the New York Yankees at the end of January, according to Jason Zillo, the team's director of communications.Zillo said MacDonald worked about 18 hours over four days for the Yankees. Zillo said MacDonald was fired today."We have zero tolerance for anything like this," Zillo said. "We've terminated him."
Needless to say, both Nagel and McDonald were way out of line and deserve any punishment they receive. This is the real world. Freedom of speech doesn't mean you get to say whatever you want without consequences.
Congrats to Schilling's daughter and shame on everyone who responded inappropriately.
