Letter to Vice President Biden

December 30, 2016

Dear Mr. Vice-President and Doctor Jill Biden

First of all, thank you for your lifetime of service to our country, you did it with dignity, class, humor and style as demonstrated last night on Stephen Colbert.

Mr. Vice President, for over the last 15  years, the light on the hill, has dimmed for me. About 12 years ago I fell into a deep depression, MDD,  and have been on medication ever since.

You see, for over 15 years of my life, (52-67) I have fought, with and without lawyers, to gain a trial to bring Chase Manhattan and service agent Ocwen Federal Bank F.S.B. to face charges that their undeniable violations of federal bankruptcy law 11 USC 362(a), cost my home of 26 years, and my home based business 'Residential Fire Sprinklers'  I had started after leaving Microsoft, in 1991, capping over 20 years in the computer and software business.  I was new to the construction business and during my transition from a regular paycheck to a feast or famine style of being paid. Several times I  needed bankruptcy Chapter 13 reorganization protection during the first decade of Residential Fire Sprinklers.

Then we enter the Twilight Zone of loan servicing craziness by Ocwen started on October 13, 2000, when I wired  Ocwen, $22,823.66  to fully reinstate my loan through October 31, 2000. When I discovered that I had overpaid over $3,850. The line items on quote did not match the given total on the same quote.  I called Ocwen and they said they 'would look into it'.

Next, unbelievably,  I was served a Notice of Default, claiming I was $10,539.69 behind on payments!

I tried to rescinded under 15 USC 1635, but Ocwen ignored it. I called my lawyer who was on vacation in England for a month!.  I then copied from previous bankruptcy petitions and filed them in court on the morning of May 17, 2001, then took the petitions to the foreclosure sale, and informed auctioneer of the bankruptcy filing and faxed a copy to the trustee in Santa Ana,  Nevertheless, they sold my home and issued a deed to O'Neal, who began eviction proceedings. When my attorney returned from vacation, he made some telephone calls, and everything seemed back to normal. The eviction attorney for O'Neal wrote a letter to me, expressing he was unaware of the bankruptcy proceeding.

Sixteen months later, my case was dismissed, but when my new lender tried to close on the new loan, it was discovered title was in name of O'Neal. Instead of filing a Rescission of O'Neal deed with the county recorder, and allowing my new loan to close, the banks sold it again to a real estate investor.

In November 2002, I informed the bankruptcy court about these unlawful actions but  Judge Meredith Jury,
ruled that the court had no jurisdiction to hear my complaint because my case was dismissed and therefore no jurisdiction to hear my complaint.

This began a 15 year series of appeals, to get my day in court. Jurisdiction became a football kicked between the courts. While I sat helplessly on the sidelines.  Why was the court preventing me from getting a trial?

It is understandable that the banks have enjoyed these last 15 years because staying out of court, is a win for the banking corporations.  They only have to play out the clock on this cellular god made the citizen. They have succeeded staying out of court, for now 187 months!

In 2004 I filed a Chapter 7 case to liquidate everything, in my two storage bins,  however, the storage operator violated the same law, and when I asked for sanctions, Judge Jury ruled that California property law was 'unclear'. Motion denied.

I appealed to BAP, Bankruptcy Appellant Panel, who reversed the court, In Re Ozenne, 337 B.R. 214 (9th Cir. BAP 2006)

Then based on new BAP law, In re Nathan Johnson 9th circuit BAP July 7, 2006, which ruled the court must hear violations that occurred during the case when asked to do so even after dismissal. I motioned the court for sanctions, the court deputy gave me a hearing date of February 14, 2011. I filed the motion for sanctions with  Points and Authorities, and personal declarations. On the morning of February 14, 2011, arriving for the hearing early, I discovered that the case had been dismissed on January  27, 2011.  This was the first time, in over ten years that  I failed to get a court notice.
I filed a notice in the court of this failure to get timely notice.

I now believed that a writ of mandamus was appropriate for my situation, which I filed in May 2011, Judge Jury, although not ruling on this appeal, was now a senior member of the 7 member panel 9th Cir BAP which was denied within a month.

I appealed to 9th Circuit that same month, Opening briefs were due January 5, 2012, and February 6, 2012, for a response brief from the banks.

Ten months after the banks failed to file anything, the court ordered the banks to submit their reply briefs within 14 days.

The banks again did nothing, and ignored the order for three more years! In August 2016, they finally responded, and on March 25, 2016, in a split decision the court published an opinion that ruled that the BAP lacked jurisdiction to hear a petition for a writ of mandamus. Let alone issue one. Citation:  No. 11-60039 (9th Cir. March 25, 2016) (Published) without even mentioning the undeniable violations of law.

Then, without request, the court issued an order for each side, within 21 days to argue their position as to whether the court should reconsider this case en banc.   The odds of getting this rehearing as a pro-se, fee waived litigant, I learned later was a 1 in one thousand chance of succeeding, but it did, costing me over $900.00 in printing/shipping charges, which on my social security check of $1120  put me right back into credit card debt, although the court already had electronic and paper versions already.

The en banc 11-member panel published Ozenne v Chase et. al. 11-60039, one day after the election November 9, 2016, and without addressing jurisdiction issues, concluded that I was just trying to circumvent the appeals process by asking for a writ. And although I had never received notice of January 27, 2011, dismissal order I should have petitioned the court for an extension of time to appeal, rather than a petition for a writ of mandamus. Even after 15 years fighting for a trial, I was now cast as a pariah, trying to get away with something and taking legal shortcuts with the law. Apparently thinking even after 15 years to gain a fair and open trial, that this was a shortcut.  A speeding motorist can get a trial within a few weeks.

Mr. Vice President, I have been denied my constitutional right, to bring a grievance to the government against the defendants for a trial. This has gone on for way too long. Dividing 15 yrs of no trial by 67 yrs old, it represents 22% of my life.
And I know you understand that our time here on earth, is our only true asset, and unreplaceable. I am sick and tired of being unable to bring these law violators into court to face proof of their violations. while the courts have debated bankruptcy jurisdiction.  I have been left twisting in the wind.  I want my constitutional right to a trial, yet in all the paperwork by the court, that basic right of every citizen, was never addressed.

Please, can you issue an executive order or another type of order to give me a trial before you leave office?
If the banks are not guilty of what I have claimed, the skilled lawyers for the banks will make quick work of me I am sure. Please order a trial for this fellow citizen, before the new administration comes into power with most Americans feeling uncertain on how that is going to work out. Please, as the executive branch of government, charged with enforcing the law,   Please enforce my rights under our constitution and its amendments to this citizen, and fellow American citizen.

The Wall Street journal published on their subscription service an article titled "Appeals Court Dodges Question of Bankruptcy Jurisdiction" in a November 11, 2016, article.

Is our United States Constitution a Mirage ?

December 21, 2016  First day of winter

Facts about the shortest day of the year

As we all know, our medium of exchange is money, which, after all, is in real reality,  just green paper. As long as everyone accepts this conspiracy of shared thought It's not a problem.

Why have jurists in the 9th circuit denied me a trial for 15 years?

Now I am beginning to wonder about the validity of this document called the United States Constitution, and its amendments if it is not enforced. Was it  just a mirage?  I guess we will see, I appealed to our President, as the head of the executive branch of government, which is charged with enforcing the law.

Of course, a jury of my peers would find the banks guilty, (the proof is undeniable),
which would end this nonsense. The banks understand this and can only suceed if this stays out of court.

My Letter and Request to President Obama

December 20, 2016

December 20, 2016

Dear President Obama and First Lady Michelle:

Please enjoy your Hawaiian Christmas break. You certainly deserve it after this particularly tumultuous year. I am writing this in the spirit of Christmas, and as a brother. in our nation of laws.

Mr. President, I need an order for a trial, envisioned by our constitution.

In 2001 the banks violated 11 USC 362(a) by issuing a trustee's deed and 16 months later,,by failing to rescind this unlawful deed, and allow my new approved loan to close.

This caused the loss of my home of 26 years which in turn caused the failure of my home based business Residential Fire Sprinklers.  that I had operated since leaving my sales position at Microsoft in 1991.

I need enforcement of the United States Constitution and its amendments.  For over 15 years now, I have been denied the constitutional guarantee that aggrieved citizens can bring their grievances to the government, for your day in court. The courts have overlooked this basic law, and has turned my case into a jurisdictional football.

I request that you enforce our constitutional law. And order a trial for Gary Ozenne,  before you leave office.

Now 67 years old, the bank's apparent strategy of attrition has worked successfully for 187 months. As you know, time is our only true asset in this consciousness, and it seems to go faster every passing year. For 15 years, courts have bounced around my case like a law school debate about jurisdiction. Since the facts and law were both on my side, this has kept the banks out of court, allowing the corporations to keep it out of court, playing out the clock of cellular life.

On the day after the election, on November 9, 2016, Ozenne v Chase Manhattan / Ocwen 11-60039 was published after a full rehearing en banc review, the court determined that the victim, was the bad guy, trying to take shortcuts.

Never a mention of the underlying violation of law, I have never had a chance to be heard!   Have these jurists forgotten this base law of the land? I shudder to think, that this drift towards justice being dispensed by men and women, and the rule of law, has taken a backseat to the personalities that have denied me, my day in court!

Will you please, end this 15-year nightmare, and order a trial at the District Court,  for this citizen to end this festering injustice, and revitalize enforcement of our constitution.

Ross Wiley - A true musical talent

Ross Wiley is a beautiful soul i came into contact through my Nephew Judge Rodgers.

Before my house was stolen we used to use that middle unused bedroom, to play music.

Ross was a pro, and very talented,, I was the drummer, just trying to keep up. Ross was and is, a true musical talent.

A very impressive young man, with a God given talent. We haven't heard the last from this talented guitarist, and native talent.  This was our first Jam, recorded on a cassette recorder.  We decided to call it 'Peyote'

The Impromptu Jam

Sadly we only had one or two more jams before, the forces of evil, stole my home.

With a Little Luck

December 16, 2016

I am writing a letter to President Obama, as head of America's' executive branch, charged with enforcing the law. In addition to being our commander in chief of our military forces.

I am asking him to enforce the law. Not subsequent laws developed during our countries evolution. But the base law of our nation.  A nation of laws, not men or women. The United States Constitution and it's amendments. I never dreamed in my previous life, that I would have to enforce these constitutional rights, endowed, just by the good luck of being born in America. We will see if these are symbols of a hollow promise by Madison, Jefferson and others, now , seemingly influenced by Wall Street Banks interests

The Rule of Law - circa -December 15, 2016

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals has concluded that my petition for a 'writ of mandamus' to order an inferior court to enforce published law was out of line, case dismissed. They said I fucked up, trying to take a shortcut.

These legal cogs in the machinery of justice has forgotten 11th-grade teachings of the United States Constitution and its amendments are ultimate law.

Some how  they have decided to continue to provide cover for the law violating banksters, rather than let this unexceptional citizen enforce his rights under the constitution. Very puzzling !

John Glenn, first American to orbit the Earth, dies at 95

from washingtonpost

John Glenn, who captured the nation’s attention in 1962 as the first American to orbit the Earth during a tense time when the United States sought supremacy over the Soviet Union in the space race, and who rocketed back into space 36 years later, becoming the oldest astronaut in history, died Dec. 8 at a hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Mr. Glenn, who in his post-NASA career served four terms as a U.S. senator from Ohio, was 95.
The death was confirmed by Hank Wilson, communications director at the John Glenn College of Public Affairs at Ohio State University. Mr. Glenn had a stroke after heart-valve replacement surgery in 2014, but the immediate cause was not announced.
Mr. Glenn was one of the seven original astronauts in NASA’s Mercury program, which was a conspicuous symbol of the country’s military and technological might at the height of the Cold War. He was not the first American in space — two of his fellow astronauts preceded him — but his three-orbit circumnavigation of the globe captured the imagination of his countrymen like few events before or since. Mr. Glenn was the last survivor of the Mercury Seven.
In an era when fear of encroaching Soviet influence reached from the White House to kindergarten classrooms, Mr. Glenn, in his silver astronaut suit, lifted the hopes of a nation on his shining shoulders. When he emerged smiling from his Friendship 7 capsule after returning from space, cheers echoed throughout the land.
“You had to have been alive at that time to comprehend the reaction of the nation, practically all of it,” author Tom Wolfe, who coined the phrase “the right stuff” to describe Mr. Glenn and the other Mercury astronauts, wrote in a 2009 essay. “John Glenn, in 1962, was the last true national hero America has ever had.”
After he was elected to the U.S. Senate from Ohio in 1974, Mr. Glenn served on Capitol Hill for 24 years and made a halfhearted run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984. When he was 77 and completing his fourth Senate term in 1998, he had one final flight of glory, returning to space as a crew member aboard the space shuttle Discovery.
As heroes go, the freckle-faced Mr. Glenn appeared unassuming and seemed to embody the middle-American values of modesty, steadiness and hard work.
He had climbed the ranks of the Marine Corps, becoming a full colonel, by accepting the most dangerous assignments and never flinching under pressure. He flew 149 combat missions in two wars and was a test pilot in the 1950s, when faster-than-sound airplanes often veered out of control and crashed in smoking heaps.
When he joined the astronaut corps in 1959, no one knew whether a human being could survive the ordeals of space travel. Yet for all the risks he faced, Mr. Glenn was a man of careful preparation and quiet responsibility.
‘Godspeed, John Glenn’
On Oct. 4, 1957, the Soviet Union made a bold advance on the Cold War chessboard by launching Sputnik, the first man-made satellite to orbit Earth. In response, the U.S. government formed NASA in 1958 amid widespread fear that the country was falling behind the Soviets in technology and military strength.
Of the seven original astronauts of the Mercury program — the others were M. Scott Carpenter, L. Gordon Cooper Jr., Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom, Walter M. “Wally” Schirra Jr., Alan B. Shepard Jr. and Donald K. “Deke” Slayton — Mr. Glenn was the oldest and the lone Marine. A lieutenant colonel at the time, he also had the highest rank and the most combat experience.
He did not drink, smoke or swear and maintained a disciplined, straight-arrow manner while training in Cocoa Beach, Fla., near NASA’s space center at Cape Canaveral. Comfortable in front of cameras — which followed the astronauts everywhere after they signed a $500,000 deal with Life magazine for a series of exclusive stories — Mr. Glenn was in many ways the public face of NASA.
Privately, however, there was friction among the “Magnificent Seven,” as the Mercury astronauts were dubbed in the news media. Concerned that some of his colleagues’ dalliances with women could lead to bad publicity and jeopardize the manned space program, Mr. Glenn confronted his fellow astronauts, admonishing them to avoid any semblance of wrongdoing.
“There was no doubt whatsoever that Glenn meant every word of it,” Wolfe wrote in his 1979 book, “The Right Stuff.” “When he got his back up, he was formidable. He was not to be trifled with.”
Not all of the astronauts were pleased with Mr. Glenn’s righteousness, however, and Shepard told him to mind his own business.
“His moralizing led to colorful and heated exchanges among the pilots, and it wasn’t pleasant banter,” Shepard and Slayton wrote in their 1995 book, “Moon Shot.”
When the astronauts voted among themselves to confer the honor of being the first American in space, they chose Shepard.
On May 5, 1961, Shepard had a 15-minute suborbital space flight, followed two months later by Grissom on a similar mission. But two Soviet cosmonauts had already circled the Earth by August 1961.
Mr. Glenn’s turn came on Feb. 20, 1962. After 11 delays because of bad weather or faulty equipment, he sat in his tiny space capsule, the Friendship 7, atop an MA-6 rocket that had failed in 40 percent of its test flights.
After liftoff at 9:47 a.m., backup pilot Carpenter said on national television, “Godspeed, John Glenn.”
The moment was shared by practically the entire nation, as a television audience of 135 million — the largest up to that time — witnessed the launch.
The flight plan called for seven orbits, but after the first, the capsule began to wobble. Mr. Glenn overrode the automatic navigation system and piloted Friendship 7 with manual controls for two more orbits, reaching a height of 162 miles above the Earth’s surface.
Midway through the flight, a warning light indicated that the heat shield, which would protect the capsule during its reentry into Earth’s atmosphere, may have come loose. Without a heat shield, it was possible that Mr. Glenn could burn up inside the capsule as it raced back from space.
As Friendship 7 was descending, all radio contact was lost. Shepard, acting as “capsule communicator” from Cape Canaveral, tried to reach Mr. Glenn in his spacecraft, saying, “How do you read? Over.”
After about 4 minutes and 20 seconds of silence, Mr. Glenn could finally be heard: “Loud and clear. How me?”
“How are you doing?” Shepard asked.
“Oh, pretty good,” Mr. Glenn casually responded, later adding, “but that was a real fireball, boy.”
Exterior pieces of the capsule’s had broken off during reentry and burst into flame. A defective warning light caused much of the panic, but during those four tense minutes, it was feared that Mr. Glenn had been lost — along with the promise of the space program.
When he splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean after 4 hours 56 minutes aloft, Mr. Glenn emerged as an almost mythic figure who had scaled heights no American had reached before.
“I was fully aware of the danger,” he said in 1968. “No matter what preparation you make, there comes the moment of truth. You're playing with big stakes — your life. But the important thing to me wasn’t fear but what you can do to control it.”
He was greeted upon his return by President John F. Kennedy and Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson. After an estimated 1 million spectators crowded the streets of Washington, Mr. Glenn insisted that the other six Mercury astronauts join him for a parade before 4 million people in New York.
“During his ticker-tape parade up Broadway,” Wolfe wrote, “you have never heard such cheers or seen so many thousands of people crying.”
From pilot to politics
John Herschel Glenn Jr. was born July 18, 1921, in Cambridge, Ohio, and grew up in New Concord, Ohio. His father ran a plumbing supply business and later had a Chevrolet dealership. His mother taught at an elementary school.
Mr. Glenn was an honor student in high school, lettered in three sports and played trumpet in the band. At Muskingum College in New Concord, he was a reserve center on the football team.
He took flying lessons in his teens and left college early in 1942 to enter a Navy pilot training program before transferring to the aviation branch of the Marine Corps. On April 6, 1943, he married Anna “Annie” Castor, whom he had known since childhood.
During World War II, Mr. Glenn flew 59 missions as a fighter pilot and took part in the Marshall Islands campaign in the Pacific. He was stationed on Guam in the Western Pacific and was a flight instructor in Texas before returning to action in the Korean War.
He was in the same squadron in Korea as baseball star Ted Williams and flew 90 missions as a jet fighter pilot. He once returned with more than 200 holes shot through the fuselage and wings of his plane.
Attached to an Air Force unit, Mr. Glenn shot down three Soviet-made MiGs during the final nine days of the war in 1953, leading his crew to paint “MiG Mad Marine” on the side of his F-86 Sabre jet.
After Korea, Mr. Glenn was a test pilot at the naval air station at Patuxent River, Md., and set a transcontinental speed record on July 16, 1957, by flying an F8U-1 Crusader jet coast to coast in 3 hours 23 minutes.
He worked at the Navy’s Bureau of Aeronautics and eventually was awarded a bachelor’s degree by Muskingum. He also found time in 1957 to appear on the game show “Name That Tune” with child actor Eddie Hodges. They split $25,000 in prize money, which was more than Mr. Glenn’s annual pay as a test pilot.
When NASA began recruiting a team of astronauts, it sought skilled pilots who could withstand rigorous physical and psychological testing and who — to fit into cramped space capsules — were shorter than 5 feet 11 inches tall. (Mr. Glenn was 5-foot-101 / 2 .)
With their courage and know-how, the Mercury astronauts embodied the spirit of the “New Frontier” espoused by Kennedy, and Mr. Glenn became friends with the youthful president and his brother Robert F. Kennedy, the attorney general.
Encouraged by the Kennedy family, Mr. Glenn resigned from the astronaut corps in 1964 to run for the U.S. Senate in Ohio. He dropped out after slipping on a rug and striking his head on a bathtub, resulting in inner-ear problems that required extensive medical treatment. In 1965, he retired from the Marine Corps, having received six Distinguished Flying Crosses and 19 Air Medals.
He then became an executive with Royal Crown Cola, invested in real estate and worked with a management company that operated Holiday Inns, particularly around Orlando. Within a few years, he was a millionaire.
Mr. Glenn stayed close to the Kennedys and was at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles when Robert Kennedy was assassinated in June 1968. He accompanied five of Kennedy’s 10 children (an 11th was born after his death) back to their home in McLean, Va. The next morning, Mr. Glenn informed the other children that their father had been killed.
“When Bob died, I had to sit on the edge of the bed as each child was waking up and tell them their dad was not coming home,” Mr. Glenn told a Muskingum audience in 1997. “It was one of the hardest things I ever did.”
He was a pallbearer at Robert Kennedy’s funeral at Arlington National Cemetery and handed the flag from the coffin to Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.). Soon afterward, Mr. Glenn helped organize a group that successfully lobbied for passage of a national gun control act in 1968.
‘I have held a job, Howard’
Making a second bid for the Senate in 1970, Mr. Glenn called for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Vietnam, but he lost the Democratic primary in Ohio to businessman Howard M. Metzenbaum. Then-Rep. Robert Taft Jr., a Republican, won the general election.
Early in 1974, Metzenbaum was appointed to the Senate to fill the expiring term of William B. Saxbe, who resigned to become U.S. attorney general. When Metzenbaum ran for a full Senate term that year, Mr. Glenn challenged him again in the primary.
At a time when the military was unpopular, Metzenbaum repeatedly called Mr. Glenn “colonel” and questioned his ability as a leader, saying he had never “met a payroll.” The comment was widely seen as an insult, insinuating that Mr. Glenn had never held a “real” job.
In a debate with Metzenbaum, the retired Marine flashed the steel beneath his benign Midwestern smile.
“I served 23 years in the United States Marine Corps,” Mr. Glenn said. “I was through two wars. I flew 149 missions. My plane was hit by antiaircraft fire on 12 different occasions.
“I was in the space program. It wasn’t my checkbook, it was my life that was on the line. . . . I ask you to go with me . . . to a veterans hospital, and look those men with their mangled bodies in the eye and tell them they didn’t hold a job.
“You go with me to any Gold Star mother, and you look her in the eye and tell her that her son did not hold a job.
. . . Stand in Arlington National Cemetery — where I have more friends than I like to remember — and you watch those waving flags . . . and you tell me that those people didn’t have a job.
“I tell you, Howard Metzenbaum, you should be on your knees every day of your life thanking God that there were some men — some men — who held a job. . . . And their self-sacrifice is what has made this country possible.
“I have held a job, Howard.”
The powerful “Gold Star Mother” speech, recognizing families that had lost children in foreign wars, quickly turned the polls in Mr. Glenn’s favor. He defeated Metzenbaum in the primary and then easily won the November general election, sweeping all of Ohio’s 88 counties. Reelected in 1980, 1986 and 1992, Mr. Glenn was the first senator from Ohio to win four consecutive elections.
A senator in space
On Capitol Hill, Mr. Glenn was a strong supporter of the military and an authority on intelligence issues. He supported a woman’s right to abortion and was an advocate of campaign finance reform, national health insurance and medical research.
He sponsored bills to improve the safety of nursing homes, reduce government paperwork and limit nuclear proliferation. As chairman of the Governmental Affairs Committee from 1988 to 1994, he helped create the Department of Veterans Affairs.
In the late 1980s, Mr. Glenn’s political action committee accepted a contribution from financier Charles H. Keating Jr., who was at the center of a nationwide savings-and-loan scandal. The Senate Ethics Committee ruled that Mr. Glenn “exercised poor judgment,” but he was cleared of any wrongdoing.
He made a run for the 1984 Democratic presidential nomination but proved to be an awkward campaigner and quit the race early, saying, “I humiliated my family, gained 16 pounds and went millions of dollars into debt.”
On Feb. 20, 1997, the 35th anniversary of his spaceflight, Mr. Glenn announced that he would not run for reelection in 1998. He established a public policy institute at Ohio State University and wrote his memoirs. In 2012, Mr. Glenn was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.
In addition to his wife, of Columbus and Bethesda, Md., survivors include two children, J. David Glenn of Berkeley, Calif., and Carolyn “Lyn” Glenn of St. Paul, Minn.; and two grandsons.
Revered for his heroism as an astronaut, Mr. Glenn remained close to the space program long after leaving NASA. In 1986, immediately after the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger, he made a little-publicized trip to Cape Canaveral to comfort the families of astronauts killed in the disaster.
Every year, he sent the results of his physical exams to NASA, just in case. At 75, he could still do 75 push-ups. In 1996, he set a flying record by piloting a twin-engine plane from Dayton, Ohio, to Washington in 1 hour, 36 minutes.
When Mr. Glenn was named to the crew of the space shuttle Discovery, skeptics said NASA was awarding him a vanity flight to make him, at 77, the oldest person ever to go into space. During the nine-day mission in 1998, Mr. Glenn helped film the flight and took part in experiments on aging. He made one of his final public appearances in June 2016, when the Columbus airport was renamed in his honor.
His return to space was a reminder of what he had accomplished more than three decades earlier, when he soared into the heavens and gave renewed hope to a grateful nation.
“People are afraid of the future, of the unknown,” he said in 1962. “If a man faces up to it and takes the dare of the future, he can have some control over his destiny.”

The verbal confrontation between President-elect Donald Trumpand the Chinese government escalated on Monday, as China responded harshly to attacks by Mr. Trump on its economic and security positions.
The exchange signaled a new and potentially more adversarial relationship between the world’s two largest economies, as Mr. Trump moves to follow through on his campaign-trail promises to challenge China’s trade and currency policies.
Chinese officials late Friday and early Saturday played down Mr. Trump’s precedent-breaking phone call with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, which a transition official said had been arranged by Bob Dole, the former Republican senator and presidential nominee. The call went beyond pleasantries and included a discussion about China and stability in the Asia-Pacific, according to a person familiar with the call. The Chinese directed their ire at Taiwan and not at Mr. Trump.
But they signaled their displeasure with a series of Twitter posts Mr. Trump leveled at China over the weekend, as he criticized its currency policies and military presence in the South China Sea.
In a packed press briefing Monday, China’s foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang suggested that Beijing had made its unhappiness directly known to members of Mr. Trump’s team.
The People’s Daily, the Communist Party’s leading newspaper, said in a front-page commentary in Monday’s overseas editions that “Trump and his transition team ought to recognize that creating trouble for China-U.S. relations is just creating trouble for the U.S. itself.” It criticized Mr. Trump’s tweets for portraying the phone call “as not a big deal” and warned that if such “petty tricks” are allowed to go unanswered, Beijing could expect to see more of these provocations once he’s in office.

Mr. Dole, in an interview, said the law firm he is affiliated with does work with the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S., and that the firm played a role in arranging the phone call. “It’s fair to say that we may have had some influence,” Mr. Dole said.
U.S.-China experts said both Mr. Trump and Beijing appear to be trying to establish boundaries for a new relationship between the countries, which is expected to be more adversarial than that favored by President Barack Obama since 2009.
At the White House, officials fielded multiple calls from Chinese officials over the weekend in which China complained about Mr. Trump’s actions and said it needs stability and predictability in its relationship with the U.S., a senior Obama administration official said.
The Chinese also were seeking guidance on Mr. Trump’s policy intentions, and White House officials said they didn’t know what they are, the administration official said.
“What you have seen in the past eight years is possibly too much predictability” from the U.S. in its approach to China, said Christopher Johnson, a former senior China analyst at the Central Intelligence Agency. “A little unpredictability is a good thing, but too much is scary. There’s a fine line there between good unpredictability and scary, and that’s the balance that has to be found.”

After Mr. Trump becomes president on Jan. 20, his first real test with China could arise in mid-April. That’s when the Treasury Department is required to make public a “currency” report that details the behavior of other nations. During the presidential campaign, Mr. Trump vowed to label China a “currency manipulator,” a designation that would require negotiations between both countries and could be a step toward penalizing Beijing. Such talks could reset the way they engage with each other.
On Sunday, Vice President-elect Mike Pence declined to say during an interview on NBC whether Mr. Trump would label China as a currency manipulator. Jason Miller, a spokesman for Mr. Trump’s transition operation, declined on Monday to expand on Mr. Pence’s comments.
Mr. Trump hammered China during the campaign for its currency and trade policies, and threatened to impose tariffs of between 35% and 45% on Chinese exports to the U.S. It was unclear if he would soften those pledges once elected, but his Friday call with Ms. Tsai brought questions about his approach to China into sharper focus.
Messrs. Trump and Pence described the conversation between Mr. Trump and Ms. Tsai as a congratulatory call initiated by Taiwan. But during the discussion with Taiwan’s leader, which lasted for about 12 minutes, Mr. Trump stressed to Ms. Tsai that his top priority is the U.S. economy, said the person familiar with the call.
“The conversation was about regional stability,” said the person, adding the call was planned weeks in advance. It marked the first of its kind since at least 1979, when the U.S. established formal relations with Beijing.
The terse exchanges between an incoming U.S. president and the country with the world’s second-largest economy have, over the course of 72 hours, broken from more than a decade of fragile diplomacy, experts said.
A rise in U.S.-China tensions before Mr. Trump takes office could shape any cooperation between the two countries on high-stakes issues. It comes amid growing alarm over the nuclear threat from North Korea, for which Mr. Trump will need China’s help to resolve.
Mr. Trump’s call with Ms. Tsai and subsequent tweets accusing China of currency manipulation, over-taxing U.S. imports and building “a massive military complex in the middle of the South China Sea” have generated a “tremendous amount of uncertainty” in Beijing, said David Dollar, the Treasury Department’s economic and financial emissary to China during Mr. Obama’s first term.
“Some of the issues with China are best settled quietly and confidentially,” Mr. Dollar said. “If the whole policy is diplomacy-by-tweet, it’s hard to think that’s going to meet U.S. objectives.”
A number of conservatives, including Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas and Tom Cotton of Arkansas, have cheered Mr. Trump’s engagement with Taiwan. Mr. Cotton said it was a sign that the U.S. wasn’t going to be complacent anymore over China’s behavior. During the campaign, Mr. Trump complained about Beijing’s ability to lure U.S. manufacturers to relocate to China, a message that resonated with voters in Rust Belt states that helped sweep Mr. Trump to victory. For some observers, his confrontation with China is a welcome change.
Last Friday morning, Mr. Trump’s secretary received a call at Trump Tower from Ms. Tsai and patched her through to the president-elect, according to people familiar with the call. It was 10 a.m. in New York and 11 p.m. in Taipei. Ms. Tsai had a prepared set of talking points and was surrounded by Taiwan’s foreign minister, David Lee, as well as two top National Security Council officials and her spokesman, Alex Huang.
Stephen Yates, a former national security adviser to Vice President Dick Cheney who worked as a Mormon missionary in Taiwan, said that for at least a week Ms. Tsai’s name was on Mr. Trump’s list of foreign leaders whom he would speak with by phone.
“To my knowledge, Taiwan was on that list early, and it took some time to arrange,” said Mr. Yates, who is seen as a candidate for a post on Mr. Trump’s national security team. “It was a message in the sense that Donald Trump is not necessarily going to be told what he can or can’t do because a foreign leader says so. That’s exactly the kind of thing that millions of Americans detest about Washington,” said Mr. Yates, who currently is visiting Taiwan for meetings with senior officials.
“If it’s going to cause some pain, then so be it,” he said.
He said the call didn’t necessarily signal a change in policy or strategy on Taiwan, which didn’t rank among the top global challenges for the incoming administration.
“Definitely, there was preparation so the president-elect was not blindsided that there might be reaction from China, from China experts, from the State Department and the White House,” he said. “I don’t think any part of the Trump team is looking for a military conflict. But I also don’t think you have to walk on eggshells to get anything out of Beijing.”
Mr. Yates played a role in introducing the strongest-ever statement of support for Taiwan in the Republic Party’s platform at its national convention this year. The platform incorporated for the first time the “six assurances” given by President Ronald Reagan to Taiwan in 1982. Those include a pledge not to set a date for ending arms sales.
Mr. Trump’s complaints about China are often focused on its economy, which has for decades relied on the purchasing power of consumers in other countries, particularly the U.S.
Mr. Trump used Twitter on Sunday to complain that China “heavily” taxes U.S. products entering their country, but that the U.S. doesn’t tax Chinese imports. China does impose a tariff, a sort of import tax, ranging between 5% and 9.7%, on many products.
The U.S. in many cases charges a tariff on imports from China and many other countries, ranging between 2.5% and 2.9%. Mr. Trump has in the past floated the idea of imposing a tariff against China more than ten times larger.
While Mr. Trump has appeared to soften some of his other campaign stances, on issues such as climate change and torture of terrorism suspects, he has not backed off his calls to more aggressively challenge Beijing.
His approach in recent days “could force the Chinese to feel they have to respond,” said Michael Auslin, a resident scholar in Asian Studies at the American Enterprise Institute. Mr. Auslin said China could decide to take any number of steps, including putting “another 1,000 missiles across the [Taiwan] strait.” It also could signal that it will back away from recent United Nations sanctions against North Korea, or launch a round of cyberattacks against U.S. agencies.
